David Kelley, music director / trombone

David played trombone for the DCJB before becoming music director in 1998. In addition to leading the band in rehearsals and performances, he is responsible for music selection and the general artistic development of the group. While continuing to lead the band, David re-established his place in the trombone section in 2003.

Throughout his time with the DCJB, David has been featured prominently as trombone soloist, and as music director was instrumental in the production of the group's latest two CDs, Christmas with the Dallas Christian Jazz Band and Sermonette.

David brings to the DCJB the experience of having toured and recorded with Jubilation Brass International. This group — led by the arranger Doyle Combs and originally affiliated with Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas — was one of the first to present Christian music in a big band format, doing so throughout the U.S., Europe and Mexico. David has a bachelor's degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, where he majored in computer science and minored in music education. He played in several ETSU ensembles, including wind and jazz ensembles, marching band, brass choir, trombone choir and various jazz combos.

In addition to the DCJB, David currently plays trombone with Paul Salos and the Let's Dance Band, the Buzz Murphy Orchestra and the EDS Jazz Ensemble. He also works as a freelance musician playing trombone, euphonium and percussion in both jazz and classical settings. He has been a featured soloist with the Plano Community Band, and has toured with the Atlanta-based Metro Big Band, led by renowned Christian composer Camp Kirkland. David has played with the Richland Early Brass, the Irving Symphony, Larry Randall's JOSHUA big band, and many others.

David is a member of Richardson First Baptist Church and works as a consultant architect for EDS.
